iPhone Duo Arrives at Apple Stores Worldwide on Launch Day

iPhone Duo launch day queue outside a glass flagship Apple Store, buyers holding foldable phones

iPhone Duo launch day arrived on Friday, October 23, as Apple’s first foldable iPhone went on sale at Apple Store locations in more than 70 countries. Sydney opened first, at 8:00 in the morning local time, and the rollout then moved through Asia and Europe before reaching North America, with queues forming outside flagship stores at almost every stop.

Apple had warned that walk-in stock would be limited, and iPhone Duo launch day split the world in two. Shoppers in the US, the UK, Australia, Germany and nine other markets could try their luck in person, in small numbers. In France, China, India, Japan and six more markets, stores handed phones only to customers with an online pickup reservation.

The reason for the caution is demand. Pre-orders opened on October 16 and sold through the launch allocation in minutes, and delivery estimates for new orders now sit in late January 2027. Apple called the pre-order demand “extraordinary” in a statement to the Financial Times, and marketing chief Greg Joswiak told TechRadar the company deliberately held units back for stores: “We didn’t ship them all away during the pre-order, we have them available at the stores.”

The Short Version

  • On sale Friday, October 23 in 70 plus countries; 28 more follow on October 30
  • Walk-in stock is limited in 14 markets, plus select stores in Italy and Macao on launch day only
  • France, China, India, Japan and 6 more markets are pickup reservation only
  • Prices start at $1,999 in the US and 2,299 euros in Germany; purchases capped at 2 per customer
  • New online orders quote delivery in late January 2027; confirmed eBay sales peaked at $4,999.99

iPhone Duo Launch Day Queues, First Buyers and a Very Long Night in New York

Sydney set the tone. The first buyer there, 48-year-old engineer Simon Krishnan, paid A$3,899 (about $2,550) for a 512GB model and told Reuters: “This is a bit of a luxury item for me, because it’s so expensive, but I just think, you know what? Life’s too short.” Stores in Australia and New Zealand also handed over the first pre-order deliveries on iPhone Duo launch day, hours before the rest of the world woke up.

In New York, dozens of buyers without pre-orders had gathered outside the Fifth Avenue flagship by Thursday evening, according to Bloomberg reporting, and the line was still there before dawn on Friday. Joswiak attended the Fifth Avenue launch in person, and Apple chief executive John Ternus, who took the job on September 1 and unveiled the Duo eight days later, was expected alongside him.

Asia produced the same pattern with a different rulebook. Crowds filled Apple Jing’an in Shanghai from early morning, yet Chinese stores only handed phones to pickup customers. In India, where the Duo starts at Rs 2,99,900, Digit reported the first buyer at Apple’s Saket store in Delhi and a buyer at the BKC store in Mumbai who had queued since 2:00 AM after travelling from Surat. He plans to give the phone away. A third customer in Noida collected three pre-ordered units, around Rs 9 lakh in total, as Diwali gifts.

Inside the stores, Apple ran the full launch playbook described in its own announcement: hands-on demos of the foldable, Personal Setup to move data across, and new Today at Apple sessions titled “Say Hello to iPhone Duo” and “Tips: What’s New in iOS 27 on iPhone.” Staff also pushed the payment routes, including Apple Trade In, monthly leasing through Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments and carrier deals.

iPhone Duo Launch Day Walk-In Stock: Where You Could Buy One, and Where You Could Not

Apple published the split for iPhone Duo launch day earlier this week and stuck to it. Limited walk-in stock went to stores in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Türkiye, with select stores in Italy joining in and Macao selling in person on launch day only. In the US, purchases are capped at two per customer, a limit aimed squarely at resellers.

France, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the UAE got no walk-in sales at all. Stores there serve pickup reservations only, and Apple’s online store has told customers in those markets to check back on Saturday, October 24, for fresh pickup slots. Stock also varied street by street: MacRumors bought a Duo at Apple Edinburgh early on launch morning without trouble, and staff there said the store received more units than expected, a result the site itself called unlikely to repeat everywhere.

The Resale Market, Without the Hype

Scarcity has a price on iPhone Duo launch day, and it is worth stating precisely. Confirmed eBay sales of Duo pre-orders peaked at $4,999.99 for a 2TB Night Sky unit, about $1,800 over its $3,199 retail price, with a 1TB model confirmed sold at $4,400. In other words, completed sales top out at about $5,000. Higher numbers circulating in roundups, including asking prices reported up to $9,000, are prices sellers asked for, not prices anyone has verifiably paid, and they should not be read as sales.

Why It Matters

iPhone Duo launch day was Apple’s first real test in a foldable market that Samsung and Huawei have served for years, and the test cuts both ways. The queues, the sold-out pre-orders and the January delivery dates show genuine demand for a book-style foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display. At the same time, a $1,999 starting price, a two-per-customer cap and pickup-only rules in ten markets show a launch managed around scarcity, not volume.

It is also an early public test for chief executive John Ternus, eight days into the job when he unveiled the phone and about seven weeks in now. Reports that Apple has raised its Duo order target by about 44 percent over the next 12 months, attributed to DigiTimes supply chain reporting, suggest the company expects the demand to hold. Whether it does depends on the next restock, not on the lines seen on iPhone Duo launch day.
