Google is taking sponsored listings inside its AI answers to 10 new countries, days after admitting those answers still earn less than a traditional search.
Google AI Mode ads are going global for the first time, with sponsored listings reaching 10 new countries while Google admits the format still earns less than traditional search. Google announced the expansion on October 28, 2026, during Alphabet’s third quarter earnings call.
The expansion covers Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google said it plans to add Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom in the fourth quarter of 2026. In the United States, Google is also launching multiturn ads, which allow ads to appear in follow-up queries inside AI Mode rather than only in the first answer.
The timing is the story. Google AI Mode ads arrive as Search revenue growth slows, and Google’s chief business officer linked part of that slowdown to AI Mode itself.
The Short Version
- Google AI Mode ads are expanding to 10 countries now, with Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
- Ads in AI Mode stay labelled as Sponsored, and the United States gets multiturn ads for follow-up queries.
- Search revenue grew 12% in the third quarter, down from 19% and 17% in the two prior quarters, and Google linked part of the slowdown to lower monetization in AI Mode.
- Google says click-through rates for sponsored product listings match organic listings, based on its own internal data.
Google AI Mode ads: the 10 countries and what comes next
Google’s blog post frames the move as scaling rather than testing. It names the 10 new countries and says Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom follow in the fourth quarter of 2026, without giving dates inside the quarter.
Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, announced the same plan on the earnings call. TechCrunch reported his words as: “This includes taking our monetization footprint global for the first time. Today, we’re announcing the expansion of ads in AI mode into international markets alongside multi-turn ads and AI mode in the U.S.”
For users, the visible change is small and clearly marked. Google AI Mode ads will be labelled as Sponsored, and Google said it will keep testing formats to keep advertising relevant. Gadgets 360 reported that existing Google Ads campaigns remain eligible, with current setups and reporting tools continuing to apply.
How people search differently in AI Mode
The commercial case for Google AI Mode ads rests on a change in behaviour, not only on reach. Chief executive Sundar Pichai said Search queries grew at their fastest year-over-year rate in five years, without disclosing the exact rate. He credited AI features with changing how people use Search.
Google AI Mode ads sit inside that longer conversation. Pichai said AI Mode queries are three times longer on average than traditional searches, while one in five globally involves voice, images or documents, and Google has passed 50 billion visual searches per month. Pichai put it plainly: “People are using our AI features more, searching in entirely new ways. Their queries are longer, personalized, and multimodal.”
Google AI Mode ads and the earnings gap they must close
Alphabet reported total revenue of $127.6 billion (USD) for the third quarter of 2026, up 25% year over year, with Google Services revenue of $96.3 billion (USD), up 11%. The headline growth did not settle the Search question. Google AI Mode ads are the company’s answer to that question, and the earnings call showed why an answer was needed.
Search revenue rose 12% to $63.35 billion (USD), below the $64.96 billion (USD) estimate reported alongside the results. That 12% compares with 17% growth in the second quarter and 19% in the first, a steady deceleration across 2026.
Schindler gave the monetization explanation directly. He attributed the slowdown to “lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode,” according to The Register’s account of the call. The company also said currency fluctuations affected Search revenue, as reported by Dow Jones.
The market reaction was sharp, and reports differ on its size. TechCrunch reported Alphabet shares fell 8% following the results, while Reuters reported a 10% fall in after-hours trading. Keep the two earnings bases separate. Alphabet reported GAAP earnings of $2.12 per share, down from $2.87 a year earlier, and adjusted earnings of $2.67 per share after excluding an $8.66 billion (USD) loss on equity investments. Google AI Mode ads: what Google claims and what is unproven
Google’s strongest claim for the format is about clicks. Schindler said click-through rates for sponsored product listings in AI Mode are already comparable to those for organic listings, according to TechCrunch’s report of the call. Secondary reporting placed the underlying data as internal United States data from August 20 to September 3, 2026. The blog post itself gave no dates.
Google AI Mode ads also carry a relevance claim that readers cannot verify from outside. Google said its research shows people are comfortable with ads in AI Mode and find them highly relevant. No sample size, no question wording and no independent study were published with the announcement. Phandroid reported that the author at Search Engine Roundtable questioned whether click parity holds for text links, as distinct from product listings.
Confirmed
The 10-country list, the Brazil, Mexico and United Kingdom plan, the United States multiturn launch and the Sponsored labelling are confirmed in Google’s own blog post.
Reported
The internal data dates for the click-through claim and the currency effect on Search revenue are reported by secondary outlets, not stated in the Google blog post. The share price fall differs between reports, at 8% in TechCrunch and 10% in Reuters.
Still unknown
No revenue figure for Google AI Mode ads has been disclosed, and no advertiser count or country-level performance has been published. Google has not said what share of AI Mode answers will show ads, or when the Brazil, Mexico and United Kingdom expansion starts inside the fourth quarter.
What to watch next
Watch the fourth quarter start dates for Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom first, and watch for any figure Google attaches to the format itself, such as revenue from AI Mode advertising or click-through data beyond product listings. Google AI Mode ads will also be judged on daily use: multiturn ads in the United States put sponsored listings inside follow-up questions, where users are narrowing a choice, and readers will quickly sense whether those listings help or interrupt.
Quick Answers
Will Google AI Mode ads appear in every AI Mode answer?
No evidence says that. Google has not disclosed what share of AI Mode answers will carry ads. Readers should expect sponsored listings in some answers, clearly labelled as Sponsored, and no ad in others.
Which countries get the ads now?
Google AI Mode ads now reach Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Did Google prove the ads work as well as organic listings?
Google claimed click-through rates for sponsored product listings are similar to organic listings, based on its own internal data. That claim covers product listings only, and the data has not been published for independent checking.
Why did Search growth slow if more people are searching?
Google linked part of the slowdown to lower monetization in AI Mode, where ads earn less than in traditional search so far. Currency fluctuations were also cited.
The Takeaway
Google has moved its AI search ads from a United States test to a 10-country rollout, with three more markets planned. The expansion answers a measured problem: Search growth slowed to 12% while AI Mode searches earned less than traditional ones. Google AI Mode ads now carry the burden of proof, because the company’s evidence rests on its own click and relevance claims. Judge the rollout on the figures not yet shared: format revenue, uptake in the new countries, and start dates for the next three markets.
