10 Ways to Speed Up a Slow Laptop Without Spending a Dime

Remember when your laptop booted in twenty seconds and opened apps instantly? Two years later it takes three minutes to start and groans when you open a second browser tab. Before you spend a single dollar on a new machine, try these ten free fixes. Most take only a few minutes, and together they can make an aging laptop feel surprisingly new again.

1. Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs

Every program that launches at boot steals time and memory. On Windows, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Startup apps tab, and disable anything you don’t need immediately: chat clients, game launchers, update helpers. On macOS, head to System Settings, then General, then Login Items, and remove the extras.

2. Uninstall Software You Never Use

Old toolbars, trial antivirus suites, and that photo editor you opened exactly once all sit on your drive, and some even run background services. On Windows, go to Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, and remove anything you don’t recognize or use. On a Mac, drag unused apps from the Applications folder to the Trash.

3. Free Up Disk Space

A drive that is more than about 85% full slows everything down. Delete large downloads, empty the Recycle Bin or Trash, and clear temporary files (Windows users: Settings, then System, then Storage, then Temporary files). Photos and videos are the usual culprits, so move them to an external drive or cloud storage.

4. Scan for Malware

Unwanted software is one of the most common causes of a sudden slowdown. Run a full scan with your built-in protection: Windows Security on Windows, or a reputable scanner on macOS. It is free, and it catches the junk that quietly eats your CPU in the background.

5. Update Everything

Outdated drivers and operating systems cause sluggishness and security holes. Check Windows Update or macOS Software Update, then update your graphics and Wi-Fi drivers too. A single driver update has fixed mysterious stuttering on more laptops than anyone can count.

6. Turn Down the Visual Effects

Animations, transparency, and shadows look nice but cost performance on older hardware. On Windows, search for “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” and choose “Adjust for best performance”, or pick Custom and keep only “Smooth edges of screen fonts”. On macOS, reducing transparency in the Accessibility settings helps too.

7. Switch to a Lighter Browser Setup

Browsers are memory hogs. If you keep thirty tabs open with a dozen extensions running, no laptop feels fast. Bookmark the tabs you actually need, close the rest, and audit your extensions, removing any you don’t actively use. An ad blocker is worth installing too, since it cuts page load times.

8. Restart Regularly

It sounds too simple, but many people never restart their laptops: they just close the lid. Memory leaks and background processes pile up for weeks. A full restart once a week clears them out and is often the fastest single fix there is.

9. Check What Is Actually Slowing You Down

Open Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS and sort by CPU and memory usage. If one process is constantly hogging resources, you have found your culprit. It might be a misbehaving app worth reinstalling, or one worth replacing with a lighter alternative.

10. Clean the Dust, Carefully

A laptop choked with dust runs hot, and hot CPUs throttle themselves to stay cool, which feels exactly like slowness. With the machine off and unplugged, use short bursts of compressed air on the vents. Do not open the case unless you know what you are doing.

None of these tricks cost anything, and most take less time than a coffee break. Work through all ten and your laptop will not just feel faster: you will finally know exactly what is running on it. And if it is still crawling after all this, at least you will know it is genuinely time for an upgrade, not just neglect.
