Apple confirmed the first Mac you can touch, with a new display and a higher price.
The touchscreen MacBook Pro features Apple confirmed on October 28, 2026, start with a tandem OLED display called PROLED XDR, direct touch input, and a Dynamic Island in place of the notch. Apple announced 14-inch and 16-inch models in Los Angeles, with pre-orders from October 28 and availability from Friday, November 6.
This is an announcement follow-up, not a preview. PetaTech24 published a preview before the event that kept every product detail labelled as reported, because Apple had confirmed only the event itself.
In Brief
- Apple announced the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display on October 28, 2026, in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes.
- The touchscreen MacBook Pro features include a tandem OLED display, direct touch, a Dynamic Island, and a newly designed hinge.
- The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds and the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds in the M5 Pro configurations Apple headlines.
- United States prices start at $2,899 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model and $3,399 for the 16-inch M5 Pro model.
- Pre-orders opened October 28. Apple says the models arrive from November 6 in 30 countries and regions.
Touchscreen MacBook Pro Features: The PROLED XDR Display
The touchscreen MacBook Pro features start with the display, and the display is the reason this model costs more. Apple says PROLED XDR uses two self-illuminating pixel layers. Treat Apple’s “world’s best display” wording as a company claim: no independent measurement was available.
The numbers are specific: up to 2,000 nits peak brightness for HDR and SDR, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and ProMotion from 10Hz to 120Hz.
One display claim stays reported. The Elec, as reported by MacRumors on July 28, 2026, said Samsung Display would be the exclusive supplier, on its 8.6-generation line in Asan, South Korea. Apple did not name a supplier in its press release.
Touchscreen MacBook Pro Features: How Touch Works in macOS Golden Gate
The touchscreen MacBook Pro features begin with direct touch input on the display, a first for the Mac. The sensor is built into the panel, not layered on top, which Apple says reduces latency. No independent latency test was available.
The gestures Apple lists
Apple lists swipe to scroll, pinch to zoom, drag and drop between presentations, double-tap to fill the screen, and flick to tile a window. These touchscreen MacBook Pro features are the confirmed gestures; the reported interface changes below are separate.
Apple says macOS translates touches into clicks, so many existing apps should work with touch right away. Apple lists Notion, Canva, Zoom, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender and djay Pro, with a footnote stating the listed apps will be available later this year. Engadget’s hands-on report tempers the picture: the interface has not significantly changed, apart from window buttons expanding slightly when touched.
The dynamic interface Apple has not described
The touchscreen MacBook Pro features reported by Gurman on October 25, 2026, include a dynamic interface: controls adapting to touch or trackpad use, and a menu around the finger. Apple’s press release does not describe that interface.
Sidecar and pull-to-refresh are earlier groundwork
Sidecar touch and pull-to-refresh in Safari, Mail and Calendar are existing Golden Gate groundwork, not proof of a touchscreen Mac, per MacRumors on October 5, 2026.
Touchscreen MacBook Pro Features: Hinge, Dynamic Island and a Lighter Body
Apple says a newly designed hinge provides greater stability while using touch.
Gurman reported on October 27, as covered by 9to5Mac, that cooling was reworked for airflow through the hinge. Apple says only that warm air is redirected away from the display.
The thinner and lighter claim resolves a walk-back. Gurman said in early October 2026, “I don’t think it’ll be significantly thinner in the end”, as MacRumors summarised. The result is a small thinning with a larger weight cut: the 14-inch model is half a pound lighter at 3 pounds, and the 16-inch model is 0.7 pounds lighter at 4 pounds.
The Dynamic Island replaces the notch, confirmed by Apple, MacRumors and TechCrunch. It is the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. The camera is a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, Touch ID remains, and the island does not bring Face ID to the Mac.
The Chip Question, and Why M5 Pro and M5 Max Stay
The chips are the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips Apple introduced in March 2026, according to Apple, MacRumors and TechCrunch. The display and the input change, while the processor does not.
The rest of the list is confirmed: up to 128GB of memory, storage up to 16TB, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Apple headlines up to 24 hours of battery life; Fstoppers lists up to 22 hours for the 14-inch model and up to 24 hours for the 16-inch model.
The next chip step is reported, not announced. MacRumors reported on October 15, 2026, that Gurman said Apple will skip M6 Pro and M6 Max and move to M7 Pro and M7 Max at the end of next year. The touchscreen MacBook Pro features buyers get in November 2026 therefore sit on March 2026 silicon.
How This Story Differs From the Preview and the M6 Model
The difference from the preview is the status of the facts. The preview listed the touchscreen model, the Dynamic Island and the lighter design as Bloomberg reporting. The touchscreen MacBook Pro features in that preview are now confirmed, except the supplier, the dynamic interface and the chip roadmap, which remain reporting. MacBook Ultra was a reported name; Apple confirmed MacBook Pro branding.
The difference from the M6 model is the hardware itself. The 14-inch MacBook Pro M6 uses a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU in the same mini-LED body. It has no touch input, no OLED display and no Dynamic Island.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro features carry a United States premium. The 14-inch M5 Pro model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch M5 Pro model starts at $3,399, each $400 above the equivalent mini-LED models. The M5 Max models start at $4,499 and $4,799. No Europe, United Kingdom or India price was verified in the sources checked, and none is stated here.
Apple says pre-orders started October 28 in 30 countries and regions, and the models begin arriving from Friday, November 6. The 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time start was the expected time in pre-event MacRumors coverage; Apple’s press release gives the date without a start time. The touchscreen MacBook Pro features are sold alongside the mini-LED models, which Gurman expects to be discontinued eventually.
Who Should Buy, and Who Should Wait
The decision turns on how much the display and touch input are worth to a workflow. The touchscreen MacBook Pro features matter most for photographers, designers, video editors and musicians who use the screen as a working surface.
- Buy if you grade colour, edit photos or video, draw, model in 3D or play software instruments.
- Buy if you want touch as an extra input beside the keyboard and trackpad.
- Wait if you own a March 2026 M5 Pro or M5 Max model, because the chips are the same.
- Wait if you need independent display, battery and touch latency tests.
