iPad mini OLED

The iPad mini OLED is Apple’s newest tablet, announced Monday, October 26, 2026. Its 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display replaces the LCD panel of the previous model.

It also brings the A20 Pro chip, a thinner and lighter body, and the line’s first water and dust resistance rating. In the United States, it starts at $699 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model.

Apple calls the iPad mini OLED the biggest update the tablet has ever received. The screen is larger, brighter and far higher in contrast, the chip is built on a 2-nanometer process, and the body is sealed against dust and water. Two catches: the display still refreshes at 60Hz, and the full A20 Pro chip is reserved for the most expensive storage tier.

This article is the announcement follow-up to the preview PetaTech24 published ahead of the October 28 event. That preview expected an iPad mini OLED, a revamped speaker system and a relocated front camera. Apple confirmed all three two days before the event, with firm prices, dates and chip details.

In Brief

  • Apple announced the new iPad mini on October 26, 2026: 8.5-inch OLED display, A20 Pro chip, IP67 rating.
  • The iPad mini OLED starts at $699 in the United States for 128GB Wi-Fi, and $849 for 128GB Wi-Fi and Cellular.
  • Pre-orders open October 28, 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time. Launch: November 6, 36 countries and regions.
  • The display is 60Hz. Apple specifications do not mention ProMotion, so do not expect a 120Hz screen.
  • 128GB and 256GB: 5-core CPU A20 Pro. 512GB only: 6-core CPU, dual Neural Engine.
  • Only Midnight and Starlight. Nano-texture glass costs $100 more, on 256GB and 512GB only.

Why This Matters

The iPad mini has always sold on one idea: the full iPad experience in a device that fits in one hand. The previous model kept the idea alive, but its LCD screen, portrait front camera and lack of any water resistance rating left it behind the rest of the iPad line.

The iPad mini OLED closes those gaps. Apple says bezels are 24 percent thinner, so the larger 8.5-inch screen fits the same footprint as the old 8.3-inch model.

iPad mini OLED: What Apple Announced

Apple unveiled the new iPad mini OLED on October 26, 2026, two days before the October 28 Pro and tell event. The announcement arrived as a press release, not on stage.

Nothing in it claims the touchscreen MacBook Pro models expected at that event have been revealed. This story covers only the new iPad mini.

The display: OLED at last, still 60Hz

The screen is the reason most buyers will look at this model. The panel is an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR display with 2,316 by 1,512 pixels, P3 wide color and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, according to Apple.

Apple says it reaches 600 nits of full-screen brightness, up from 500 nits, and up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness for HDR content only.

The limit is the refresh rate. Apple specifications do not mention ProMotion, and GSMArena confirms the iPad mini OLED panel runs at 60Hz.

Scrolling will feel as smooth as the old model. Nano-texture glass cuts glare for $100 more, on 256GB and 512GB only.

The A20 Pro split buyers need to know

The A20 Pro debuted in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo, and it now reaches the iPad mini OLED. Apple says it is built with TSMC 2-nanometer process technology and carries Neural Accelerators in each GPU core.

Against the A17 Pro, Apple claims up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times faster graphics and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance, figures PetaTech24 has not tested.

The buying catch is the split inside the range. The 128GB and 256GB models get a 5-core CPU, 7-core GPU and single 16-core Neural Engine. Only the 512GB model gets a 6-core CPU, the same GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.

GSMArena reports the lower tiers lose one efficiency core and half the neural processing power.

Sound, sealing and cameras

The most unusual change is one buyers cannot see. Apple calls it the Acoustic Display system: special woofers play through the display for punchier bass and more volume, while custom tweeters sit hidden between the glass and the aluminum enclosure for clearer highs.

The iPad mini OLED has no speaker holes. The sealed enclosure helps it reach IP67: 1 meter for up to 30 minutes in laboratory tests, though resistance can decrease with wear.

The 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera now sits on the landscape edge for sideways calls, unlike the portrait placement before. The 12-megapixel rear Wide camera records 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, and the True Tone flash is now adaptive.

The iPad mini OLED keeps Touch ID in the top button. The N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Cellular models add the C2 modem with up to 50 percent faster cellular speeds, according to Apple, over 5G via eSIM.

The USB-C port transfers data at up to 10Gb/s, and the battery is rated at 18.9Wh. Apple keeps the same battery life as the previous model.

Fast charging reaches 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 35W-or-higher adapter, while the United States box includes only a 20W adapter. It ships with iPadOS 27, gains extended display mode with iPadOS 27.2, and supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C).

iPad mini OLED Price and Availability

In the United States, the iPad mini OLED costs $699 for 128GB Wi-Fi, $799 for 256GB and $999 for 512GB, while Wi-Fi and Cellular models cost $849, $949 and $1,149.

Germany (GSMArena): Wi-Fi 749, 879 and 1,129 euros; cellular 919, 1,049 and 1,299 euros. United Kingdom: Wi-Fi 699, 799 and 999 pounds; cellular 849, 949 and 1,149 pounds.

India (GSMArena): Wi-Fi models cost 82,900, 94,900 and 1,18,900 rupees; cellular models cost 1,09,900, 1,12,900 and 1,36,900 rupees.

iPad mini OLED Preview vs Reality: What the Announcement Settled

PetaTech24 preview coverage treated an OLED iPad mini as reported rather than confirmed, because Apple had confirmed only the event. The preview listed an OLED screen, a revamped speaker system and a relocated front camera as reported expectations, and warned the chip was unreported.

The announcement confirms all three expectations for the iPad mini OLED, settles the chip question with the A20 Pro, and confirms the November 6 sale date. The touchscreen MacBook Pro models expected at the event remain reported, not announced.

What We Still Do Not Know

Some facts remain unknown. Apple does not list RAM capacity for the iPad mini OLED. No independent benchmark or battery test exists yet, Apple has not said which chip configuration produced its headline figures, and no review has tested the Acoustic Display against conventional speakers.

FAQ

When can I pre-order the new iPad mini, and when does it launch?

Pre-orders for the iPad mini OLED open Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time in the United States. Launch day is Friday, November 6, 2026, in 36 countries and regions.

How much does the iPad mini OLED cost?

The iPad mini OLED starts at $699 for 128GB Wi-Fi and $849 for 128GB Wi-Fi and Cellular. The 256GB Wi-Fi model costs $799 and the 512GB Wi-Fi model costs $999.

Does the iPad mini OLED have a 120Hz ProMotion display?

No. Apple specifications do not mention ProMotion, and GSMArena confirms the iPad mini OLED panel runs at 60Hz.

OLED improves contrast, color and peak brightness. Scrolling smoothness is unchanged.

Which A20 Pro chip do I get with each storage size?

The 128GB and 256GB models get a 5-core CPU, 7-core GPU and single 16-core Neural Engine. Only the 512GB model gets a 6-core CPU, the same GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Is the new iPad mini waterproof?

It is water resistant, not waterproof. IP67 was tested in a laboratory to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes, and Apple says resistance can decrease with normal wear.

Rain is fine. Do not swim with it.

Verdict

The iPad mini OLED is the biggest update the small tablet has ever received, and Apple earned that line with the screen, the sealing and the chip. The OLED display alone justifies attention from anyone who watches video on a small tablet daily.

The IP67 rating removes a real worry, and the landscape camera fixes a daily annoyance. Previous-model owners have a strong upgrade case.

The price and the split chip keep this from being simple. At $699, the base iPad mini OLED costs $200 more than the previous model at launch and carries the weaker 5-core A20 Pro, while the full chip costs $999 for Wi-Fi.

Buy the 128GB or 256GB model if the screen and sealed body are what you want, and accept the 60Hz limit. Wait for reviews if battery life decides it.
